Art description

Alex Salaueu

Alex SalaueuAlex Salaueu was a Belarusian artist, born in 1926, known for his avant-garde style and contributions to the arts. His work was diverse, including theater-decorative art, easel painting, and graphics, and he designed more than 100 performances, including plays by Shakespeare and Petrushevskaya.

Salaueu's interest in art started during his time in the army, where he participated in battles in the Baltic States and Karelian Isthmus. He was awarded the Order of the Red Star for his service. After the war, he met Ado Vabbe in Tallinn, who introduced him to abstract art and recommended that he pursue painting in that style. Salaueu went on to study at the Saint Petersburg Art and Industry Academy, Leningrad Higher Art and Industrial College named after V. Mukhina, and Belarusian Theatre and Art Institute.

In 1965, Salaueu began working as a production designer at the Y. Kolas National Academic Drama Theater, and later became the main artist there until 1995. He also worked as a teacher of drawing in high school in Madona. He was an active participant in city, regional, republican, and international exhibitions, and his works were exhibited in Russia, the Baltic States, Germany, France, and Australia.

Salaueu's work in the theater was particularly outstanding. He designed more than 800 performances in Vitebsk and more than 100 in various theaters in Belarus and abroad. His work was always figurative and anthropomorphic, with intriguing subject matter and fixed, typical features. His paintings were about fundamentals such as love, birth, death, and the people. Salaueu's theatrical designs elevated his work to the level of a mythological reality that was more authentic than the visible and everyday.

Salaueu was an active member of the Belarusian Union of Artists, and in 1982 he was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Byelorussian SSR. In 2017, he was awarded the Order of Francis Skaryna for his significant personal contribution to the development of art and culture in Belarus. His work became an integral part of the culture not only of Vitebsk, where he had a significant influence on the formation of the artistic environment, but also the whole of Belarus in the second half of the 20th century. Even after his death in 2019, his studio remains active and his legacy lives on through his works.
