Timo Kähara (b. 1981) is an Estonian artist.
Although he liked drawing and painting from early age, life had other plans for him for a while.
After high school (in year 2000) he wished to start studying in an art college, but he didn’t pass entrance examination. Instead he started studying in Estonian Maritime Academy. After graduation (in year 2006) he worked 2 years as 3rd mate on cargo ships and sailed in international waters. Eventually he realized that this was not for him, the art still attracted.
He resigned his career at sea and once again tried to start his art studies. This time he was successful. In 2012 he graduated Pallas University of Applied Sciences in Tartu, Estonia, where his main faculty was media design. He has been involved with creative work ever since. Participated in several solo and group exhibitions. He is a member of Tartu Artists’ Union since 2019.
Artist Statement
When I paint or draw a portrait, I try to capture the character of the person. This doesn’t mean that I want to make a photorealistic copy of the person, but rather that I capture that special something that makes each person unique and human.
I like that quiet dialogue between me and the character whom I am portraying and I wish that my artwork could enter into a dialog with the viewer as well. Each character portrayed should be a representative of a larger group or phenomenon in addition to being an individual. Every face or figure should tell a bigger story than her/his/its own.
