Supporting evidence can include invoices, auction records, exhibition catalogues, labels, photographs and certificates.

Not every older artwork will have a perfectly documented history. But there should be a reasonable and credible explanation of where the work came from.

Why Is It So Important on the Secondary Market?

When you buy directly from an artist or their gallery, the origin of the work is usually straightforward.

On the secondary market, the situation is different. An artwork may have changed hands several times over many decades.

This is why provenance becomes particularly important. It can help support attribution and authenticity, establish the history of ownership and identify potential questions about the work before you buy.

Ask Before You Buy

Reputable auction houses usually include available provenance information in their catalogues. Private sellers and dealers should also be able to explain what they know about the history of a work.

If you are considering an artwork, ask:

Where did it come from? Who owned it before? Is there documentation? Has it appeared at auction or in an exhibition?

A missing piece of history does not automatically mean that something is wrong. But if a seller cannot explain the origin of a work at all — or avoids reasonable questions about it — it deserves closer examination.

A Good Artwork Should Have a Story

Buying art is emotional, but on the secondary market it should also be informed.

You may fall in love with a painting in seconds. Before you take it home, take a little more time to understand its history.

At Artstac Gallery, we believe that the story behind an artwork is part of understanding what you are buying.

When buying art on the secondary market, provenance matters.
