Ignatenko builds the composition through contrasts of shadow and saturated colour: the surrounding darkness concentrates attention on the figure, while warm highlights trace the cascading hair and model the body with remarkable softness.

Particularly accomplished is the treatment of the hair. Individual passages of light move through the long curls, creating volume and movement against the dark background. Rather than relying on precise linear description throughout, Ignatenko allows parts of the figure to dissolve into shadow, producing an atmosphere that is intimate, cinematic and deliberately enigmatic.

The painting demonstrates the artist’s strong academic foundation. Born in Gomel in 1975, Sergey Ignatenko studied painting at Gomel Art College before continuing at the Belarusian State Academy of Arts in Minsk, where his teachers included prominent artists Mai Dantsig, Alexei Marochkin and Mikhail Savitsky. After graduating in 2002, he returned to Gomel and taught at the art college. He is also recorded as a member of the Belarusian Artists’ Guild.

Ignatenko developed an international exhibition career. Records list exhibitions and gallery presentations in New York, Paris, Singapore, Germany, Spain, Austria, the Netherlands, Norway, Canada and Ireland, among other locations. In 2006 he received an Honourable Mention at the American Juried Art Salon in Dallas.

His work has entered collections internationally, and a portrait by Ignatenko of his former teacher Mai Dantsig is recorded in the collection of the National Art Museum of Belarus.

Moonlight represents the more intimate side of Ignatenko’s figurative practice: technically assured, psychologically suggestive and built around the expressive possibilities of light.

Oil on canvas, 2010.
76 × 62 cm.
Signed lower right.
Original artwork.

Sergey Ignatenko (b. 1975),

Moonlight, 2010.

Oil on canvas, 76 × 62 cm.

Original figurative painting.

Signed lower right.

[51
19
60,59,56,57,58,55,24,54,53,41,61,62,52,63
post-297","product","type-product","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","product_brand-sergey-ignatenko","product_cat-paintings","product_tag-60","product_tag-belarusian-art","product_tag-contemporary-figurative-art","product_tag-contemporary-realism","product_tag-european-art","product_tag-female-figure","product_tag-figurative-art","product_tag-figurative-painting","product_tag-moonlight","product_tag-nude-painting","product_tag-oil-on-canvas","product_tag-original-painting","product_tag-sergey-ignatenko","product_tag-signed-painting","first","instock","shipping-taxable","purchasable","product-type-simple
["GET
