Against this structure, Zhuravel introduces vigorous passages of cobalt blue, red, white, green and black. Sweeping lines, splashes and accumulated pigment interrupt the geometry, producing a dynamic tension between control and spontaneity.

Yellow and ochre dominate the surrounding field, giving the painting an immediate luminosity. At its centre, the energetic concentration of blue, white and red functions almost as an explosion within the carefully constructed framework. The contrast between these two visual languages — geometry and gesture — gives the work its distinctive rhythm.

Tony Zhuravel, also known as Anatoly Zhuravel, was born in Orsha in 1963. He is a Belarusian contemporary painter associated with the artistic tradition of Vitebsk and became a member of the Belarusian Union of Artists in 1997. His work is particularly recognised for layered surfaces, unexpected colour relationships and an intuitive approach to the painted gesture. Artsy describes his unpredictable palette and interwoven textures as distinctive characteristics of his practice.

Zhuravel has received a number of distinctions. Biographical records list Grand Prix awards in Painting and Tapestry at ART-MARK in 1992 and 1998, as well as a Grand Prix at the republican exhibition Time. Space. Personality in 1998. He is also recorded as having received a United Nations prize in 1998.

His work is represented in public collections including the National Art Museum of Belarus and the Museum of Modern Art in Mogilev; published biographical records also list the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow among collections holding his work.

Zhuravel has also exhibited internationally. Artsy documents his exhibition history and records the 2018 exhibition Couleurs & Formes in Tallinn as his third solo exhibition with Norman Fine Arts. The exhibition presented large-scale works alongside smaller figurative, oil and acrylic paintings.

This painting demonstrates the qualities central to Zhuravel’s mature abstract language: saturated colour, layered texture, geometric construction and spontaneous painterly movement. Its substantial physical surface rewards close viewing, while the strong chromatic structure gives the work an immediate presence from a distance.

Acrylic on canvas, 2016.
65 × 70 cm.
Signed and dated lower right.
Original artwork.

Tony Zhuravel (b. 1963),

Abstract Composition, 2016.

Acrylic on canvas, 65 × 70 cm.

Original artwork.

Signed and dated lower right.

[77
19
91,80,85,79,59,88,29,90,83,89,70,63,87,78,82
post-318","product","type-product","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","product_brand-tony-zhuravel","product_cat-paintings","product_tag-91","product_tag-abstract-art","product_tag-acrylic-on-canvas","product_tag-anatoly-zhuravel","product_tag-belarusian-art","product_tag-colourful-abstract","product_tag-contemporary-art","product_tag-contemporary-painting","product_tag-geometric-abstraction","product_tag-geometric-painting","product_tag-original-artwork","product_tag-signed-painting","product_tag-the-cube","product_tag-tony-zhuravel","product_tag-vitebsk-school","first","instock","shipping-taxable","purchasable","product-type-simple
["GET
