Art description
Peeter Mudist (1942 - 2013)

Peeter Mudist (19 April 1942 in Tallinn – 6 December 2013) was an Estonian painter and sculptor. He graduated from Tallinn Secondary School No 1 in 1960, then studied power engineering at the Tallinn Polytechnic Institute from 1960 to 1963, but dropped out of the 4th year and entered the Estonian SSR State Art Institute in 1963, graduating in 1967 with a degree in painting.

He then worked in various positions in Tallinn, including as an artist at Arsis in 1971-1979 and as a lecturer at the Tallinn Pedagogical Institute in 1979-1981. Mudist participated in exhibitions since 1968. He was a member of the Estonian Artists’ Association since 1972.

Peeter Mudist excelled in all traditional forms of art – painting, sculpture and printmaking. He painted mostly recognizable motifs – people, flowers, landscapes. His late work became more and more abstract. For the mummy, the titles of his works were important: for example “Sniffing a flower” or “All roads are still open and all wishes can be fulfilled”, “Earthwork in and around Freedom Square”.

Peeter Mudist also expressed himself in writing. Most of it is published in two books: “Published in the Mud. The Riding Course” (2002, Estonian Cultural Endowment Annual Prize in Essay 2003) and “Illustrated Mud, or Tobias” (2004).

The latter is a voluminous art album containing a lion’s share of the artist’s work alongside author texts and biographical photos.
