The great Estonian artist Monet, Rein TAMMIK.
I came to Tallinn in 1989 for the 1st time, following an invitation from the association of Estonian painters.
I came to Tallinn for the first time in 1989 after being invited by the Union of Estonian Painters. The president was Ando Keskula and I decided to visit several painting workshops. Ants Juske accompanied me on all these steps and during several days I visited and sometimes bought the works of artists selected by Ants Juske, whom I have always considered outstanding and the best critical art,
what Estonia has known.
I bought Nicolas Kormasov's "la route de raphid", one of his masterpieces, from Henri Roode, from Peeter Mudist. And he introduced me to Rein Tammik, which I appreciated for his kindness, sense of painting and more. I understood that Rein Tammik wanted to expand his palette, travel and discover Normandy, the fortress of the French impressionists, Giverny, Rouen, where Monet, Manet, Renoir, Cezanne, Degas stayed etc.
I invited him to France at the end of 1990 and took him under an exclusive contract to my gallery in Treport, next to Eu, where I lived at Domaine DE Beaumont. I bought these paintings for 3 years, including what I consider to be one of my masterpieces, Ants Juske sadly disappeared in 2018.
When Rein Tammik arrived in France, he freed himself from the hyperrealist influence, the Soviet occupation, and sublimated this neo-Emotionism, which was characterized by his Norman painting in 1991-1993.
We can call this period of Rein Tammik one of the rarest and new Estonian emotions.
I helped him settle down financially and live there. I told him later that the South of France would allow him to sublimate himself and produce a painting in the style of Cezanne or Picasso. But he preferred to stay in the EU, in the royal city of Louis Phiippe.
This painting was painted by Rein Tammik, this painter had just left his homeland Estonia to emigrate to France. This masterpiece shows the extraordinary emotion he felt when he discovered this cathedral.
This glorious monument of Gothic art has been painted several times by the greatest painter in the history of the Impressionists - Claude Monet.
In this place was the church where Rollo, the founder of the Viking Duchy of Normandy, was baptized and buried in 911. The construction of this cathedral was started in the 12th century, continued, expanded in the 13th century in the Flying Gothic style between 1485 and 1507. The cathedral was partially destroyed during the religious wars and the revolution, where it was nationalized and looted.
The most beautiful paintings of this historical monument have been painted
Claude Monet, a series of paintings at different times of the day to play on the variations of light.
You can find them in different series
At the Musée d'Orsay in Paris
at the Getty Center in Los Angeles
Washington National Gallery of Art
This painting by Tammik is the most representative of his career and can be called post-impressionist, and as Ants Juske said, it is probably the best period, the best painting of the artist, too little known in Estonia, but this Estonian artist, one of the few contemporaries who had public auctions in Rouen, London, Paris.
For the most discerning collectors, look for these paintings owned by Americans and French.
