Marcel Peltier (1924–1998) was a French painter and lithographer whose work developed within the tradition of French figurative and Impressionist-influenced painting. Trained at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris and later at the École des Beaux-Arts de Rouen, Peltier became particularly recognised for landscapes in which light, water and reflections play a central role.
Painted in 1975, this atmospheric river landscape is characteristic of that sensibility. An expansive blue sky dominates the composition, while the river, surrounding greenery and distant architecture are rendered through fluid, expressive brushwork and a luminous palette.
The year of the painting’s creation was also an active exhibition period for Peltier: in 1975, he exhibited at Galerie Marie-Jeanne Garoche in Paris and Galerie Hamon in Le Havre. His work was subsequently exhibited internationally, including in the United States. His works are held in French and international public collections, including the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen.
Peltier received several distinctions during his career, including the Prix de la Jeune Peinture and the Médaille Arts-Sciences-Lettres.
