Sergey Ignatenko’s At the Theatre (2015) is an elegant figurative composition exploring one of the artist’s recurring subjects: the human figure, atmosphere and the quiet emotional narratives of everyday life.
Executed in oil on canvas, the work reflects Ignatenko’s distinctive approach to figurative painting, combining academic training with the influence of the Impressionist tradition. His paintings are characterised by an interest in light, colour and atmosphere, often carrying a sense of nostalgia and romanticism.
Born in Gomel in 1975, Ignatenko entered art school at the age of eleven and later studied painting at the Gomel Art College. In 1996 he continued his education at the Belarusian State Academy of Arts in Minsk, where his teachers included established Belarusian and Soviet artists such as Mai Dantsig, Alexei Marochkin and Mikhail Savitsky. After graduating in 2002, Ignatenko returned to Gomel, where he taught at the art college and established his own studio.
Ignatenko has developed an international following. His work has been exhibited through galleries and projects in Austria, the Netherlands, Norway, Canada, Ireland and Belarus, among other countries. His paintings are also represented in private collections internationally, including in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Denmark, Israel, Spain, the Netherlands, Norway and Canada.
At the Theatre belongs naturally within this figurative tradition. Rather than treating the subject simply as a record of a theatrical setting, the painting captures the anticipation, elegance and atmosphere associated with an evening at the theatre.
